Key in the cup

A key has a narrow shaft and a toothed head; it appears in the cup when a solution already exists but hasn't been used yet. It speaks of an understanding that unlocks a standstill — the word that's missing, the person who knows, the paper waiting for a signature. A large key near the rim concerns days close at hand; a small one at the bottom, something still ripening.

Position changes the tone: nearer the rim speaks of what is close, nearer the bottom of what is further off; a clearer shape speaks louder than a faint one.
