Anchor in the cup

An anchor is a cross with curved arms, usually near the bottom — a sign of stopping that isn't a punishment but a choice. It speaks of attachment: to a place, a job, a person, a promise. An upright anchor means a support that holds and carries. Tilted or half-sunk in the grounds, it speaks of a bond that has given way and needs a new arrangement.

Position changes the tone: nearer the rim speaks of what is close, nearer the bottom of what is further off; a clearer shape speaks louder than a faint one.
